Fancier

App Development

Share the glitter, not the litter

Aiming to create a peer-to-peer community to buy and sell second hand festival outfits, this app MVP has been created in Ruby on Rails during a 2-week design & development sprint, using a variety of software project management tools & techniques.

What's the idea behind Fancier?

Imagine the impossible has happened and you got your hands on tickets to your favorite festival ! The only catch: It's next weekend and you got nothing to wear.

Who's ever been to a place like Burning Man knows: Nevada, we got a problem.

What could be easily solved by ordering a little something through the likes of AliExpress or Amazon brings two more problems, and one of them quite substantial:

The items are either little original or a monstrous spawn of the devil, aka Fast Fashion, with all its negative impact for people and planet. Let's face it, usually they are both.

Fancier was born with the intention to solve all these problems at once aka Share The Glitter, Not the Litter.

In other words: Provide festival enthusiasts a sustainable, original, and accessible alternative to signing a pact with the devil (or staying at home).

The first pitch to onboard my product team....

You can check out a functional MVP on getfancier.com (careful: the seeds are all fake)

The MVP was created during a two weeks dev sprint alongside three other junior developers. As the ideator of the concept, I acted as the Product Owner throughout the sprint, and kept on working on this project on-and-off since completion - more about that later. During the sprint the fooling tolls and techniques were used:

  • Prototyping/Wireframes in Figma
  • Front-end design using CSS, JavaScript and Bootstrap elements
  • Back-end development in Ruby on Rails
  • Workflow Management with Trello, making use of the Kanban technique
  • Hosting with Heroko
  • Collaborative developing in GitHub
  • Creation of User Personas
  • Creation of User Stories

Business Plan

Do you remember when some time in spring 2020 suddenly everything stopped and we started spending extended time at home?

Yeah, that was pretty much when the first version of Fancier was able to pass through real-life tests and partner prospection.

Like many others, I have used the sudden overkill in me-time to geek out, learn new things and wrap my brain around different ideas.

I have thus created a proper pitch deck for the app, including a full scope competitor audit and financial model.

With things moving around and other opportunities arising, I came - for now - to the conclusion to remodel the business models and keep Fancier as a slow-burn side project.

There's still work in progress behind the scenes and if you happen to be an aspiring CTO willing to brainstorm and get cracking together - please give me a shout!

(these people are actually my friends and were a big inspiration for the concept...)
